Why isn't my American twist working?

When nail enhancements don't last, there are multiple reasons depending on the technique used. A well-applied soft gel extension should last up to four weeks. In my opinion, here are the most common reasons why soft gel extensions don't last.

Natural Nail Preparation.

Preparation is very important. Thoroughly degreasing and preparing the nail surface before applying primer and gel remains a critical element. Skipping this step compromises the longevity of the enhancement.

The Right Amount of Product.

If not enough gel is placed in the tip, there is a risk of having empty pockets inside the tip, which does not guarantee optimal adhesion. Conversely, if too much gel is applied, it risks overflowing onto the skin, which can also eventually cause lifting. When too much gel is applied, it is essential to clean the skin with a cleanser before curing.

Size Selection.

A tip that is too small does not provide the correct structure; it may "pop off" in the days following application. If the extension is long, it would have too much pressure to stay adhered, and at the slightest impact, it could also break.
A tip that is too large cannot fully adhere to the nail; the edges extending beyond the nail's contours would contact the skin and eventually lift.
To choose the right size, the tip must perfectly cover the entire nail from edge to edge. If the tip resists or needs to be forced even slightly, it means it is too small. If the tip extends beyond the lateral edges of the nail, it is too large. If necessary, you can lightly file the edges of the tip, especially the part that will be near the cuticle, to adjust it to the natural nail.

Poor Quality Products.

Very cheap products like those from Temu and Amazon marketplace are probably inexpensive compared to products from known brands, but they offer no guarantee regarding their safety and the quality of the ingredients, let alone the durability of their hold.

The Technique!

Yes, even if soft gel application is easy and quick, you need to master the technique. Knowing the amount of gel to apply to the tip and the pressure to exert on the nail just before curing with the mini lamp... in fact, it's not complicated; you will "feel" how to do it quite quickly with practice.

Gel tips are very flexible and adaptable to most nails. That said, as a professional or experienced amateur, you can make adjustments (because you know the nail structure). Sometimes you just need to file the free edges a little, and most of the time, slightly thin the tip with the e-file near the cuticles.

The good news is that the technique comes with practice; you still need to have the right gestures, but once acquired, perfection will come with practice, and you will love doing beautiful, quick, and durable enhancements! :)
